Oldham County Public Library

Unattended Children in the Library Policy

While children are welcomed and encouraged to use The Oldham County Public Library, we are concerned about their safety and welfare. Therefore, in the best interest of the child, it is the policy of The Oldham County Public Library that children under the age of 12, NOT be left unattended in the library. A responsible adult (18 and older) or sibling (12 years or older) should accompany young children while they are using the library.

While these ages are set for policy they do not guarantee the safety of your child.

We urge parents to remember that the library is a public building, and that it is not in the best interests of any child to be unattended except when participating in a supervised program.

The library staff provides a wide variety of materials and services to children, but does not assume parental responsibility.

In the event a child (under the age of 12) is left unattended, the library staff will notify the parent or guardian when:

When parents or guardians cannot be contacted, the child will be placed in the care of the Oldham County Police Department.

This policy becomes effective October 12, 2006, and replaces any previous policy regarding Internet use, written or implied. The Board of Trustees of the Oldham County Public Library reserves the right to amend, alter or revoke this policy if it is deemed necessary and desirable to do so.
