Loan Procedures

CHILDREN’S CARDS: The responsibility for using and borrowing library materials by children under 18 years of age rests with their parents or legal guardians who are also solely responsible for monitoring their children’s borrowing selections. At no time will library staff act in the place of parents to limit a child’s access to or use of library materials. Children may not check out video materials without the parent’s (or responsible party’s) library card.

LOAN PERIODS: 28 days except as marked: Children’s materials - Print and audio 28 days; video 3 days. YA materials - all 28 days. Adult material - print 28 days, audio 14 days, video 3 days. Adult print materials that are new and for which there are hold lists – 14 days.

OVERDUE FINES:

All print $.10/day
Children’s - audio $.10/day
Video $1.00/day
YA - audio $.10/day
Adult - audio and video $1.00/day
Inter-library loans $.10/day

The maximum charge for overdue materials that are normally $.10/day is five dollars ($5.00) per family (same household) for all items returned at the same time. The maximum charge for overdue materials that are normally $1.00/day is ten dollars ($10.00) per family (same household) for items returned at the same time. Because a book deposit is available at each library, there will be a charge for Sundays, holidays, and announced closings. Fines will be waived for any items due on days the library is closed due to weather or other emergencies. The check-in date for book deposit items is the most recent date the library was open.

OTHER OVERDUE RATES AND RESTRICTIONS MAY APPLY TO SELECTED SPECIAL COLLECTIONS. Renewals. If items have not been placed on reserve by another library customer, library materials may be renewed three times. Overdue items may be renewed, however, a fine is charged for the intervening time between due date and renewal date. Renewals are not permitted if the cardholder has more than $5.00 in fines or more than 5 items overdue. Items borrowed from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan may be renewed pending renewal request approval from lending library. Overdue notices. Patrons will be notified of overdue materials. However, failure to receive notice of overdue materials or charges does not constitute a waiver of this policy or any of the conditions of this policy. Patrons who have furnished the library with their e-mail addresses will be notified prior to a book becoming overdue. Recovery of unpaid fines and overdue items. When cardholders have fines or overdue items that equal or exceed $25, and have not responded to two notices, the library may turn the account over to a collection agency. A $10 charge will be assessed to each account turned over to a collection agency. Any expenses incurred in an attempt to secure the return of library materials will be charged to the patron. These charges may include, but not be limited to, materials, postage, and court cost. There will be a $10 service fee for any returned checks.

LOST MATERIALS: When a patron loses library materials, the cardholder pays the original cost of the item, and accumulated fines on the item are waived. The item is withdrawn from the collection. Library materials that are 90 days overdue are converted to a “Lost” status. The cardholder’s borrowing privileges are suspended and the cardholder is assessed the original cost of the item. The library does not accept replacement copies of lost materials in lieu of payment of charges.

DAMAGED MATERIALS: If materials are not returned in usable condition, the cardholder pays the original retail cost of the item. The library assumes no responsibility for damage caused to a borrower’s audiovisual equipment by items in the library collection. The conditions of this policy apply to the entire library system, not any single location. Overdue materials from one location will result in overdue charges and denial of checkout privileges at all locations.
